END OF MARCH BOX TO AFGHANS FOR AFGHANS...

ONE very heavy, double knit, afghan of many colors, 9 hats, a vest and a sweater...

We are grateful for your beautiful, hand-made wool gifts for the girls and boys. Thank you for putting so much attention and love into
blankets and garments that are absolutely first-class -- conveying our
respect and message of friendship to the Afghan people during wartime.

Your blankets, sweaters, vests, socks, mittens, and hats (for ages
7-16 years) are now all sorted, packed, and on their way. The
experienced Mennonite Central Committee is taking care of the overseas
transit for Help the Afghan Children. Our anonymous donor enabled us
to send the cartons from San Francisco to the staging area on the US
East Coast. After our gifts are distributed to the kids during the
winter, Help the Afghan Children will report back to us, and we will
share that information with you.

Our 43 cartons contain 2,130 hand-knit and crocheted wool items, as
follows:

120 blankets
560 sweaters
200 vests
300 hats
400 pairs of mittens
550 pairs of socks

We can't say thanks enough for being so generous with your time,
talent, and wool.

Afghans 4 Afghans Knitting Continues!

Box sent out today contained:
2 sweaters, 5 hats, 1 vest

FROM A4A:
Thank you for your beautifully made wool blankets and garments for the
children in the schools run by Help the Afghan Children. This "part 1"
campaign for youth has now been packed and shipped out -- starting the
long journey to the girls and boys in Afghanistan.

Your action produced almost 5,000 hand-knit and crocheted practical
gifts of friendship. This is a wonderful group accomplishment!

You and fellow knitters and crocheters across the U.S. and Canada have
once again showed phenomenal effort -- with your own time, resources,
and talent -- to tangibly reach out to the Afghan people. No easy feat
-- Afghanistan is on the other side of the world. More than nine years
since this war started. Thank you for remembering Afghan children with
the work of your own hands and hearts.

These 76 boxes contain the following new, wool items for youth (ages
7-16 years) next winter --
300 blankets
476 sweaters
440 vests
750 hats
1,000 pairs of mittens
2,000 pairs of socks

Total: 4,966

See our March 12 blog post with action photos of our dedicated
Basement crew at our AFSC Collection Center that sorted and packed the
cartons --

Afghans for Afghans current mailing...

FEBRUARY 1ST

From Afghans for Afghans....

The Embassy's thank you/New Year greeting to the knitters who participated in creating sweaters vests, hats, socks, mittens and more for the Afghan children...

Message from Afghans 4 afghans today...

We just got word that Church World Service is distributing 7,000+ of our wool blankets, sweaters, vests, socks, mittens, and hats to their children this week. Some were distributed on Wednesday and more on Sunday. These are cartons that we sent off in late 2009 and March 2010. The former batch had to transit overseas and then get through the customs process in both Pakistan and Afghanistan -- by then, the weather was warming and too late to give for the winter season. The second batch had the same long journey overseas and then had to clear customs twice. Getting containers released from government authorities is a difficult feat, even for humanitarian purposes. Church World Service had a tough year operating under more challenges than ever, and our hearts and admiration go out to them for their perseverance and for distributing our gifts with dignity and love to each child. The plastic bags serve as wrapping paper and help the kids to keep their new possessions clean.
